How to Use Furniture Shield

Our clear, water-based urethane topcoat is the structural finish over Evolve stains and Satin Dreams paint on wood furniture. Thin coats, fast dry, no yellowing. Here is how we apply it for a finish that lasts.

Safety

Water-based and low VOC, but still gear up. Wear safety glasses and gloves, and use a cartridge respirator in poorly ventilated rooms. Ventilate during application and let the finish fully cure before heavy contact. Refer to the SDS for first aid details.

Step-by-Step

From cured color to sealed finish

PREP

Start from a cured, clean, bare surface

Furniture Shield needs a fully cured, clean, dry surface. It cannot go over wax, oil, or existing sealers, so refinishing projects get stripped to bare wood or bare paint first with Furniture Stripper and neutralized with Finishing Cleaner. Sealing raw bare wood with no stain? Give it a light sand to 220 grit, then wipe off every trace of dust.

Pro tip:

Check recoat readiness before you seal. In normal conditions (65-75F), Satin Dreams paint is ready to seal after 2 hours. Evolve stains must pass the clean-rag test: wipe the surface with a clean rag, and if any color transfers, wait longer.

Shake or lightly mix

Shake the container or give it a light mix before you pour. Do not dilute or thin the product. It goes on straight from the can.

Pro tip:

Spraying? Fit a nylon or fine-mesh pre-filter on the intake hose. It keeps polymer skinning from clogging the tip mid-pass.

Apply a thin, even first coat

Work with a brush, roller, or HVLP/LVLP spray gun in thin, even passes. Apply uniformly to the point of saturation and avoid puddles and runs. Keep the workspace above 40F, and skip outdoor sessions if rain is expected within 12 hours.

Thin coats beat thick coats every time. Two thin passes cure harder and look clearer than one heavy pour.

Let it dry, then check the surface

Furniture Shield is dry to the touch in 1-2 hours at 75F and ready to recoat in 2-4 hours. If the dried coat feels rough or gritty, dust settled while it cured. Lightly sand with 220+ grit, wipe clean, and move on to the next coat.

Pro tip:

Your hand is the best dust detector. Run it over the piece after sanding, and if you feel any grit, wipe again before the next coat.

Build 2-3 thin coats, then let it cure

Repeat until you have 2-3 thin coats for full protection. Protect the piece from dust, rain, condensation, and handling while it dries. Full cure for a water-based urethane like this typically runs 7-14 days, so go easy on the surface during that window.

Pro tip:

Clean brushes and tools immediately with soap and water while the product is still wet. Dried urethane in a brush is almost impossible to rescue.

Do

  • Test a small area first. Coverage runs about 100-150 sq ft per gallon, but wood porosity changes the math on every piece.

  • Confirm recoat readiness. Satin Dreams is sealable after 2 hours in normal conditions. Evolve stains must pass the clean-rag test with zero color transfer.

  • Keep every coat thin. 2-3 thin coats cure harder, look clearer, and resist wear better than one heavy coat.

Don't

  • Never apply over wax, oil, or old sealers. Nothing adheres to them. Strip to bare wood or bare paint first, then neutralize with Finishing Cleaner.

  • Don't dilute or thin the product. It is formulated to flow and level straight from the can.

  • Don't work below 40F or ahead of rain. Keep the surface above 40F and hold off if rain is expected within 12 hours.

Which sheen should I choose?

Matte for a modern, low-reflection look. Satin for the most forgiving everyday finish. Gloss for a durable, high-shine surface that shows fingerprints and scratches more.

Can I use Furniture Shield on raw, unstained wood?

Yes. It seals bare wood without changing the color. Give raw wood a light sand to 220 grit first, then apply as normal.

Can I put it over existing polyurethane or wax?

No. Sealers do not adhere over wax, oil, or cured polyurethane without prep. Strip to bare wood or bare paint with Furniture Stripper and neutralize with Finishing Cleaner first.

The finish dried rough or gritty. What happened?

Dust or airborne particles got trapped while the surface was curing. Lightly sand with 220+ grit once dry, wipe clean, and apply another thin coat.
