Coverage Rate: Approx. 100-150 sq. ft. per Half Gallon
- Prep. Test a hidden spot, remove the hardware, and work in a ventilated space between 40°F and 90°F. Wear nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Apply. Brush on a thick, even coat, about 1/8 inch. The gel holds on legs, doors and trim.
- Wait. 50 to 60 minutes for one or two coats of paint or varnish, 3 to 4 hours for built-up layers, and 5 to 8 hours or overnight for polyurethane and epoxy. Cover with plastic on long waits.
- Scrape. Once the finish bubbles and softens, lift it off with a flat scraper. Reapply on stubborn spots, no cleanup needed between coats.
- Clean. Wipe the surface with Finishing Cleaner on a damp cloth, follow with a clean water rag, and let it dry fully before you refinish.

Everything to know before you brush on the first coat.
What finishes will it remove?
Latex, oil-based and chalk paint, plus varnish, shellac, lacquer, polyurethane and epoxy. Paint and varnish usually let go within the hour. Poly and epoxy need a longer wait, so give those 5 to 8 hours.
The one exception is factory-sealed, UV-cured coatings, mostly found on furniture from big box stores. See our Surface Guide for how to spot them.
Can I use it indoors?
Yes. There are no harsh fumes, so most of our customers work in the garage, the basement or a spare room. Keep a window open or a fan running, and wear nitrile gloves and safety glasses. If your piece was painted before 1978, test for lead first and wear a mask.
Is it safe on antiques and veneer?
Yes. The gel softens the finish, not the wood, so antiques, veneer and carved details come out clean. Test a hidden spot first, and scrape with the grain using a plastic or dull scraper on thin veneer.
How long do I leave it on?
50 to 60 minutes for one or two coats of paint or varnish, 3 to 4 hours for built-up layers, and 5 to 8 hours or overnight for polyurethane and epoxy. Cover it with plastic on long waits so it stays wet. Leaving it on for up to 24 hours won't hurt the piece.
Do I need to clean between coats?
No. Scrape off what has lifted, brush on a little more where it's stubborn, and wait again. The residue won't hurt anything.
Do I need the Finishing Cleaner?
We recommend it. It lifts the last of the stripper residue so your new stain or paint grips the wood, and it cleans your brushes too. Get it on its own, or save with the Furniture Stripper Kit, which includes both.
Do I need to sand after stripping?
Not always. After the Finishing Cleaner, many customers stain or paint right away. For the best paint adhesion, a light pass with 220 grit sandpaper helps.
Does it work on metal?
Yes. It lifts paint from metal hardware and frames too. Test a small spot first on anything with a plated or specialty finish.
What if it isn't working?

Quart or half gallon?
A quart covers roughly 50 to 75 sq ft, enough for a chair, a side table or a set of drawers. The half gallon covers 100 to 150 sq ft for a dresser, a dining table or a few pieces at once, and it costs less per ounce.
