  • Lamb's wool applicator, foam brush, or lint-free cloth
  • Clean lint-free wiping rags
  • Impervious gloves and splash-resistant eye protection
  • 180-220 grit sandpaper and a tack cloth
  • Spray bottle with water
  • Scrap wood of the same species for testing
Safety

Low odor, but still a stain. Evolve is soy-based with VOC under 25 g/L, safer than solvent stains, but pigment still transfers to skin and fabric on contact. Wear impervious gloves and splash-resistant eye protection. Work between 40F and 90F, away from wind and dust. Store at 40-90F, keep from freezing, and discard if frozen. Never leave the stain unprotected: topcoat with Furniture Shield once the rag test passes.

Step-by-Step

From bare wood to sealed color

Prep

Strip, clean, and sand

Evolve penetrates, so the surface has to be bare and even. Strip any old finish with Furniture Stripper, then wipe the piece down with Finishing Cleaner and let it dry. Sand uniformly to 180-220 grit, working the whole piece the same way, then remove every trace of dust. Test your color on scrap of the same species before you commit.

⏱ Prep session
Pro tip:

Uneven staining almost always traces back to inconsistent sanding or a dry surface. Sand the whole piece to the same grit and it will absorb the same everywhere.

Shake the bottle, dampen the wood

Shake vigorously before opening. Pigment settles in storage, and a weak shake gives you pale, uneven color. For a lighter shade or to stretch coverage, cut with up to 10 percent water. Right before you apply, lightly dampen the surface with water. Damp, not wet. Open pores take the pigment evenly.

⏱ 5 minutes
Pro tip:

Shake, don't stir. A good vigorous shake remixes the nano-pigment dispersion better than any stir stick.

Apply the stain

Work in circles or with the grain. Load a lamb's wool applicator, brush, or lint-free cloth and apply in manageable sections. Evolve penetrates deep on its own, so there is no need to press or scrub. Keep each section wet until you blend into the next one.

⏱ 15-25 minutes
Pro tip:

Keep a wet edge. If a section dries before the next one meets it, you will see a lap mark. Work steadily across the piece.

Wipe off the excess

Wipe before it dries. While the section is still wet, wipe the excess off with a clean lint-free cloth, moving with the grain. What stays in the pores is your final color. Want it deeper? Apply a second coat within 1 hour of the first. Want it lighter? Wipe sooner and harder, or dilute the next coat with up to 10 percent water.

⏱ 10-20 minutes
Pro tip:

Use two rags. One for applying, one clean one for wiping. Swap the wiping rag before it loads up with pigment or you will smear color instead of lifting it.

Dry, rag test, and seal

Dry 4-6 hours, overnight preferred. Then run the rag test: rub a clean white cloth across the surface. If no color transfers, you are ready to seal. Topcoat with Furniture Shield for long-term scratch and water protection. Evolve is a stain, not a finish. Left unsealed, it wears off wherever hands and cleaners touch it.

⏱ 4-6 hrs dry + topcoat
Pro tip:

If the rag picks up color, give the piece more time and test again. Sealing over stain that has not passed the rag test is the fastest way to a cloudy topcoat.

Good to Know

Do this, not that

Do

  • Test on scrap of the same species first. The same shade reads differently on oak, walnut, pine, and maple. One test board saves a refinish.

  • Dampen the wood before you stain. Open pores absorb evenly. Dry wood soaks unevenly and goes blotchy.

  • Always topcoat. Seal with Furniture Shield once the rag test passes. Unsealed stain wears off with use.

Don't

  • Don't stain over residue or a sealed surface. Wax, oil, old finish, or stripper residue blocks penetration. That is what the strip and Finishing Cleaner passes are for.

  • Don't work outside 40-90F or in wind and dust. The surface dries before the pigment settles and debris lands in the wet stain.

  • Don't expect opaque coverage. Evolve is semi-translucent by design. We highlight grain, we don't hide it. For a painted opaque look, use Satin Dreams.

Why is my stain coming out blotchy or uneven?

Almost always a prep issue. Sand the whole piece uniformly to 220 grit, wipe with Finishing Cleaner to remove any residue, and lightly dampen the wood before applying so the pores absorb evenly.

Can I mix colors or lighten a shade?

Yes. All 12 shades are mixable with each other for custom tones, and you can dilute with up to 10 percent water for a lighter shade or extended coverage. For a deeper tone, apply a second coat within 1 hour of the first.

Do I have to seal it?

Yes. Evolve is not a finish on its own. Once the piece is fully dry (4-6 hours, overnight preferred) and passes the rag test, seal with Furniture Shield for long-term protection.

What about tannin bleed on oak, walnut, or pine?

Natural tannins in oak, walnut, and pine can darken the finished color unevenly, especially around knots and repairs. Because Evolve is semi-translucent, it shows less than under a light opaque paint, but we still test on an inconspicuous area first and seal between coats over repaired or putty-filled areas.
