The step most people skip. Finishing Cleaner neutralizes stripper residue and preps bare wood so your stain, paint, or sealer actually bonds.
What You'll Need
Wear gloves and safety glasses. Finishing Cleaner is biodegradable with no phosphates and no solvents, but it is a skin irritant, so both are required PPE. Rinse exposed skin with water. Store between 40F and 90F and keep from freezing.
Step-by-Step
All softened finish should already be scraped off. Finishing Cleaner pulls the thin film the scraper left behind, not whole coatings. Put on your gloves and safety glasses, crack a window or open the garage door, and set a clean dry rag aside for the final test wipe.
⏱ 5 minutesMix equal parts Finishing Cleaner and clean potable water in your bucket for normal residue removal. For heavy or embedded residue, skip the dilution and use it undiluted on those areas.
⏱ 2 minutesOn stubborn coatings, apply Finishing Cleaner before scraping to help loosen adherent material.
On furniture, apply with a clean wet rag or sponge and work with the grain. Get into carvings, corners, and undersides. On floors, apply generously with a brush and allow dwell time to loosen contaminants before scrubbing.
⏱ 5-10 minutesWipe clean and rinse with clean water. Then test with a clean dry rag. No color transfer means the surface is neutralized and ready for refinishing. If the rag picks up color, make another pass and test again.
⏱ 5 minutesOne extra pass now saves a full refinish later. Heavy residue clears faster with undiluted product than with repeat diluted passes.
Let the surface dry completely before stain, paint, or sealer. Rushing this step is why topcoats bead, streak, or fail to cure. Dry, open wood takes the next product evenly.

Work with the grain. On furniture, a wet rag or sponge moving with the grain lifts residue out instead of pushing it around.
Use the rag test. Wipe with a clean dry rag and check for color transfer. A clean rag is your ready signal for stain, paint, or sealer.
Go full strength on heavy residue. The 1:1 dilution handles normal cleanup. Embedded or stubborn residue gets undiluted product.
Don't skip this step. Stripper residue blocks adhesion. Stain beads, topcoats peel, and you end up redoing the whole piece.
Don't substitute soap or plain water. The residue is chemical and film-like. Soap leaves its own film and water alone will not lift it.
Don't refinish a damp surface. Let the piece dry completely first. Stain needs dry, open wood to penetrate evenly.
Yes. Stripper leaves a thin film of dissolved coating and stripper residue. New stain, paint, or sealer will not adhere properly on top of it. Finishing Cleaner neutralizes the surface so the next coat bonds.
