Do I need a primer or wood conditioner?
No. Evolve's soy oil base carries the color deep into the grain and conditions the wood as it goes. Start with clean, bare, dry wood and wipe it on.
How do I apply it?
Shake it well. Brush or sponge it onto small areas, or use a lambswool or microfiber applicator on flat surfaces. Rub it into the grain, let it soak in for 15 to 30 minutes, then wipe off the excess with a soft cotton cloth. Work between 45°F and 90°F.
How do I get a darker color?
Add a second coat within an hour of the first. Rub it in, then wipe off the excess the same way.
Can I mix the colors?
Yes. All 12 shades mix, so you can blend your own color. You can also layer a different shade over a base coat for a variegated look. Test your mix on a hidden spot first.
Can I use it as a wash?
Yes. Dilute it with 10 to 20% water and brush or roll it on for a soft, paint-wash effect.
Do I need to seal it?
We recommend it. Let the stain dry 6 to 8 hours, then protect it with our Furniture Shield.
Can I use it outdoors?
Yes. The pigments are UV resistant, so Evolve works on interior and exterior wood, including decks. Red shades like Cabernet can fade in direct sunlight over time.
What will it stain?
Any bare, porous wood: furniture, cabinets, floors, decks, doors, windows and trim. It needs to soak in, so it won't take over paint, varnish or a sealed finish. Strip those first with our Furniture Stripper Kit.
How much do I need?
A pint covers about 62 sq ft and a quart covers about 125 sq ft. A pint handles most side tables and chairs, and a quart is the better pick for a dresser, a tabletop or cabinets.
Does it contain Prop 65 chemicals?
No. Evolve's Safety Data Sheet lists no chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer or reproductive harm, and it carries no hazard signal word. We still recommend gloves and safety glasses while you work.
